Chapter Fifteen

Alex’s head ached as they turned right onto a side street several blocks from the shipyard. Finn had offered to drive and she’d been quick to take him up on the offer. She was not in the mood for navigating traffic.

When they’d come downstairs, they’d found WeiLin tipsy and arguing with Nikki about the best hero to use in some new game. He could still investigate the ward, he’d only had one raspberritinni.

He sat in the back seat telling every pun he could think of involving cats, giggling like a maniac. Alex contemplated climbing over the seat and strangling him with his own seat belt. Her patience was running dramatically thin today.

She looked at the clock in the dash. “Four hours gone already.”

Finn glanced at her. “We’ll save your friend. It’ll be okay,” he said in the most reassuring tone she could imagine him mustering.

Alex tried to smirk, the corner of her mouth creeping up, but her head hurt too much. Her eyelids felt as if they were in a perpetual wince. “Careful there, Black. You’re letting your cop show.”

He frowned out the windshield, his grip on the wheel tightening. “Excuse me?”

Alex chuckled. “You have an instinct to protect people. Especially those that need help. You’ve been fighting it, but the cracks are showing.”

Finn’s shoulders hunched, his frown deepening into a scowl.

WeiLin continued his happy babbling to himself in back, now singing along to some 90s pop song that played quietly on the radio. The reality of their situation weighed on Alex. Her panic, like bile, settled in the pit of her stomach where it had taken up permanent residence.

Her barely-there smile slipped away as if it had never existed. “WeiLin doesn’t even know what he needs to break the barrier. Who knows how long it will take him to find everything and put together the spell. We may not even be able to get near Garreth after we break in. If we get in.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll get you in,” WeiLin crowed.

Finn watched him through the rearview mirror. “He’s a lightweight, huh?”

“Compared to you lately, everyone’s a lightweight.”

Finn’s eyes narrowed as they flicked back to the road in front of him. “Touché.”

Alex sighed. “WeiLin doesn’t get out much.” She paused, digging through her memories. “I’m not sure he’s even old enough to drink.”

WeiLin leaned forward, shoving his head between their two front seats. “Not for two more months. Let’s go drinking for my birthday!”

“Sure thing,” Alex said. She used the same voice on children as she did drunks and WeiLin was a bit of both. “Why don’t you lay back and relax until we get there, okay?”

WeiLin fell back against the seat with a thump. “Sure thing, boss.”
